On Friday, members of the Nigerian Police Force seized control of the entrance and exit of the facility housing the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The parliamentarians’ estate had three entrances, and thirty cops were stationed at the first and second gates, with twenty-five patrol trucks blocking the other two.
Just after House Speaker Martins Amaewhule accused Governor Sim Fubara of plotting to destroy the legislative quarters, the officers seized control of the area.
The rise of Victor Oko Jumbo, a factional speaker, has caused a crisis in the state assembly.
The faction loyal to Fubara in the Rivers State Assembly was, however, disowned by Clerk Emeka Amadi.
Martin Amaewhule will continue to serve as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, according to Amadi.
This comes after Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the minister of the FCT, had a public spat over the state’s political structures.
After a new speaker emerged on Thursday, Fubara made an unannounced visit to the facility on Thursday, stating that he needed access to the place.
“Do you not own the Assembly quarters? Is it a bad idea to drop by to see how things are progressing?
It has been brought to your attention. I went to check things out personally as we have a new speaker. The governor hinted at some possible actions he might take on the matter for the sake of the people.
