The EFCC erred in its prosecution of Yahaya Bello and Dele Momodu over an alleged N80.2bn scam

While the case against Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi, is still underway, veteran journalist Dele Momodu has accused the EFCC of “misfiring” in its investigation.

In their probe into Bello, Momodu claimed, the EFCC neglected to exercise due diligence.

During an Instagram Live, the PDP chieftain criticized the EFCC for allegedly accusing Bello of using public funds to pay for his children’s education in full before he left office.

It was his contention that Ola Olukoyede, the current chair of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), ought to have taken a page from of his predecessors’ “bootted out ignominiously” instances when he attempted to prosecute Bello.

When the new chairman was appointed, Momodu believed that he would be able to learn from the experiences of his predecessors.

All of them were humiliatingly let go, so if I were the current chairman, I’d just take my work very seriously and work as quickly and efficiently as possible. Furthermore, following the law will guarantee your success.

“I was on the verge of tears as I watched the EFCC chairman, either last week or the week prior. He kept insisting, “If I don’t do this… you won’t have to do a media trial.”

“I don’t work for EFCC but from all the things that I have read, a lot of them misfired,” Momodu replied when asked if the EFCC was lying about Bello. The truth is that. They didn’t work. They failed to carry out adequate research.

“When you mentioned that a man withdrew funds to cover his children’s school fees right before he was set to step down as leader, and then you investigated the paperwork and found that these things began in 2021 or 2022 (laughs),” I can assure you that I am not illiterate.

While Bello was governor, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged him and three others with laundering N80.2 billion.

In addition, Olukoyede said that before he left government, Bello took $720,000 out of his account to cover his children’s school costs.

The previous governor strongly disagreed.
