A new minimum salary of N90,000 has been proposed by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for workers in Nigeria.

The proposal is an attempt to resolve the long-running disagreement between the federal government and Organized Labor over the minimum wage.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) called for a statewide strike on Tuesday to demand a minimum wage that is much higher than the present N30,000. The topic was discussed at length during Tuesday’s Senate plenary.

We need the full Senate to figure out how to get the federal government and the labor unions to agree on a budget between 75,000 and 80,000 naira.

“If you go by 90,000 naira, it means in the last five years since this law was made (N30,000), we’ve seen food inflation, purchasing parity, and other market trends of around 32 to 33%, so the labor should be very happy with what we are doing,” he said.
