Ebonyi State secondary school pupils took their WAEC exams Thursday despite a sit-in order from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In observance of Biafra Day, on May 30, IPOB had issued a sit-at-home order through its spokesperson, Emma Powerful.
The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) celebrated May 30 as a sacred day to remember the men and women who gave their lives so that we can live. This includes those who died before, during, and after the Nigerian genocidal war against Biafrans from 1967 to 1970 and beyond, as well as those who have died since then.
The Biafran people observe a mournful memorial day on May 30th. To pay tribute to our brave warriors. We beg that all Biafrans observe this one day of silence in honor of our fallen warriors who battled for our freedom.
Every Biafran living in Biafra territory is expected to remain at home on this day and contemplate the peril posed by the unification known as Nigeria, which has claimed the lives of millions of Biafrans. Outside of Biafra land, Biafrans are likewise asked to pay tribute to our heroes by staying home or at least cutting back on activities on this particular day.
“In remembrance of our heroes and heroines, on Thursday, May 30, 2024, all operations shall be halted,” stated IPOB, adding that “all schools, government offices, private offices, banks, transport unions, market unions and private individuals” are directed to do the same.
Nonetheless, it was noted that students in all three zones of Ebonyi State are presently taking exams with the oversight of Prof. Nwobasi, the state’s commissioner of education.
The state governor, Francis Nwifuru, has ensured that schools are adequately protected, according to the commissioner, who spoke on the matter.
