The Nigerian government intends to mandate mining worker insurance, according to Dr. Dele Alake, minister of solid minerals development, in the wake of the recent catastrophic mining pit collapse in Galadima Kogo, Shiroro local government area, Niger State.
Nevertheless, the minister said that the disaster could have been prevented during a condolence visit he paid to Niger State governor Umar Bago in Minna over the weekend, on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.
In light of the tragic mine pit collapse in Niger state, I would like to extend the President’s thoughts and sympathies to the dead’ families, the injured, the community at large, and the state’s administration and citizens. It needs to stop; it’s bad and preventable.
Despite the fact that we now know the accident was caused by excessive rains, Alake reaffirmed their commitment to closely monitoring mining operations to make sure they comply with environmental regulations.
According to LEADERSHIP, a collapse at a mining site in Galadima Kogo, Shiroro local government area, Niger State, early this week killed one person and trapped hundreds of others below ground.
The site was run by African Minerals and Logistics Ltd. It was said that the occurrence was caused by heavy rainfall.
The weather and a lack of proper equipment have impeded the continuing rescue operations.
The minister praised the state government for quickly coordinating with federal authorities to launch emergency rescue operations, emphasizing the need to spare no effort in rescuing those who are still trapped.
