On Sunday, Olusegun Obasanjo, the country’s former president, said that President Bola Tinubu’s economic and security policies were flawed and that the current federal government was unable to effectively manage.

While acknowledging the necessity of two of the three decisions made by the Tinubu administration, Obasanjo argued that they were mishandled and had resulted in the economic and social impoverishment of Nigerians.

Obasanjo also addressed the matter of the military coup in the neighboring Niger Republic and the elimination of fuel subsidies.

He went on to say that the country will not reach its potential unless the National and State Assemblies pass a law supporting a development program for the next 25 years.

His Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, issued a statement on behalf of the former president in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State. The president lamented that the current government has failed to resolve the country’s economic woes by attracting investors and stabilizing the value of the naira relative to the dollar.

Obasanjo delivered his remarks at a colloquium on Sunday in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), titled “Nigeria’s Development: Navigating the Way Out of the Current Economic Crisis and Insecurity.” A copy of the statement was provided to LEADERSHIP.

By calling his opponents “sycophants and spin doctors,” Obasanjo attacked his position on the much-touted renovated Port Harcourt Refinery in Rivers State.
